Seemingly shocking Graphics appear
in TGS ‘08 RE5 trailer . . ?!

I am as excited for Resident Evil 5 as any of you, it will probably be my Game Of The Year for 2009, and as March is quickly approaching, the excitement has been building. Then I saw the latest TGS Resident Evil 5 trailer from TGS ‘08 . . .
When I saw the opening of this new trailer I honestly thought I was seeing a flash back to an older PS1 game, perhaps a earlier Resident Evil title done in HD (like the MGS1 flashback in MGS4). But no, this was Resident Evil 5.
I was shocked at the use of the “X” cut tree’s that were made famous by Grand Theft Auto 3. The gravel road was all jagged and stood out like a sore thumb over the blurred grassy texture and trees. Something was terribly wrong with that scene. After replying the video, I hear wind, but I see no trees move at all either.
The whole birds-eye scene looked bland and terrible. For the desert being such a bland environment anyway (compared to some, like jungle etc), what environment that is there, needs to look great, and get across to the players that the desert is real, but this did not succeed at all.
Thankfully, once the trailer left that scene the graphics picked back up to what they should be: Fantastic. Now I just hope we don’t have to see the use of those “X” cut tree’s very often throughout the game. Such as during what seemed to be a driving section etc. And if they are used, they are very hard to see and just used to fill in some barley visible gaps.
Overall, using that scene for the opening, is in my opinion a huge mistake for Capcom to use as the opening scene for the trailer. It needs much more work to be up to standard. And yes, I am aware that many long distance scenes like that are similar, and don’t reflect on the quality of the game that much. But I thought this observation was warranted as I haven’t seen those good old tree’s for years!

Big deal.
You`re talking shi..t, want to be famous or something… WASTE OF TIMEEEE!!!!
i have no clue what you’re talking about, maybe if you stopped worrying about trees you would see better graphics
Personally I agree with many, I think many ppl these days pay way too much attention to these things than the actual gameplay per-se’.
Not that the authour doesn’t have the right to voice his opinion, and you can see what he is talking about if you look closely enough on the full sized image.
But for me, a game can have medium to decent graphics and it will still win me over. Shite, I still have a SDTV for cryini’ out loud, and I’m impressed by many games that I throw in my 360 these days. So RE5 won’t be an exception - in my books anyway.
wow, human kind has hit a new low, is this a cheap shot at RE5? you do know EVERY CONSOLE GAME HAS BAD TEXTURES AND BAD OBJECTS HERE AND THERE, right? not everything can look as detail, it isn’t possible in todays fixed console hardware you idiot.
MGS4 has them, Gears 1 and 2 has them, Halo 3 has them, every top graphical game has them.
of course being a nit picky …. as your self you going to find some. we haven’t reached that level of hardware power NOT to have them.
geezus, get informed. kids and attention seeking these days…yeessh
they’re place holders, lol..the game isn’t finished yet and stuff are still being worked on.
you fail.
@ Nervz,
While we encourage comments, we do not like such tone. By all means, disagree, you have every right to do so, but you are the one showing your age, or lack of of it by stooping to lows like you are.
You achieve nothing but show that you yourself have little regard for others, as none of us win or grow when ppl stoop to such things. By all means, discuss the issue, express your ‘thoughts’ but within the confines of our TOU and COC . . .
I also know that these things occur in games and understand this, but each authour is entitled to their opinions, just as you would be if you decided to post some article of item you noticed.
Which I’m sure you have at times. But do think before putting your wpords down, or you will be banned from the site . . . thanks Ed:
You are fucking retarded. Writing dumb articles like this is why your site is not popular.
he’s right, this is a huge mistake for capcom, i hope they put all there time and money in to making the trees as real as they can…….wait, what? tree’s? what kind of loser are you? tree’s? you wote an article on trees? and how bad they look? lol i hope capcom keep the X trees, so more losers have something to write about, lol the trees. lol
Althoug that is pretty crappy with the x cut trees, c’mon, that’s nitpicking at it’s worse. I thought the game didn’t look amazing, but much better than how you say it.
Let’s not be completely ignorant, and use a fine tooth comb on a scene that looks great as it is.
BTW, with so many trees in that scene, were expecting them ALL to be photo realistic? I’d like to see the technology for that….
I actually noticed the trees too. Maybe they just wanted a panning shot of the desert, but didn’t really have an area of desert that you play through that was big enough, so they used some of the background. Maybe they ARE just placeholders. I really just hope I won’t be walking around and will get cut by a paper-thin X bush.
There is no excuse for this in today’s games, unless it has a budget like Earth Defense Force…
But anyone who bought EDF (me!) surely just bought it for the fun, not the “graphical finesse”.
You, sir, are a jackass of the biggest kind.
Resident Evil 5 is much, much more powerful than any of the previous installments. You just want to make a name for yourself by saying such things.
Do you think a game of crappy graphics would make a cover for EGM, or the biggest highlights on 1UP, IGN.com and GameSpot?
You have only prove one damn thing, stupid: you don’t know shit about games. Can’t write about, can’t read about it, doesn’t know anything about it. Do you even know what a joystick is? Or a console? You seriously think that anyone who obviously doesn’t play videogames at all can write about it and expect people to listen/read? Sorry, but you’re nothing more than a sad, sad little man, who as a child had a console refused by your mamma or something…
@ Rafael Arbulu,
While I agree with you in many respects, I also disagree. There have been many cases where major games have made the covers of major publications, only to fall once the game reaches the shelves, HAZE was just one typical instance.
Touted as THE best thing since sliced bread, yet it delivered graphics that were average at best and gameplay that left everyone wondering WTH !
Yes RE5 is a great looking game, and from everything I’ve seen (ED) it is shaping up to be probably one of the best, not THE best games on the 360 (cosnoles) in some time, in its own genre’. And while the game as such does look great, I have also noticed a shift in graphics since those first in-game scenes began to appear.
WHat this item shows is that, there are many in todays gaming workld that DO expect perhaps way too much from their games, and that we need to realise that a game can only deliver so much without the need for some very high powered hardware to push it along to get to anything like full photorealism.
However, it does not excuse you from degrading another authour publicly as you did. I could simply remove your comment, which would be easy, but then, as an editor I’d not have the chance to make my comments, and show others how childish you might well be.
Even though you may well have a nice site (which does look great btw) it’s not very professional to do as you do. In fact, this item was written more as a point to show how some do look at games, the author has written some great items in the past, and his MGS4 review gain huge acclaim across the net when published.
I might not agree with him in this instance, but that does not give me (or you) the right to make such comments. I think the one showing how childish one is is you, unfortunately.
I could go on the attack as you did, but what would that serve, nothing really. If you disagree, then great, but perhaps try doing so in a constructive manner in order to build conversation, which ultimately could sway both parties to see things differently . .
Oh, and btw, I’ve seen similar items like this on IGN, GameSpot, 1UP and dare I say EGM/CVG . . . .
Wow, that’s great… “tree’s”? The fuck is that?
Well it’s a bit like “The Trees The Trees, what about the trees . . ”
Showing how some will find the smallest thing wrong with games these days, but in fact, do point out some obvious flaws, even though they may not have any real impact on the game its self.
I think the game looks great, but then, so did many about HAZE and the first Resistance: Fall Of Man on the PS3, which proved disappointing once delivered, and a hell of a lot different to the “in-game footage” shown through press and videos . . So anything IS possible . .
What it does show is, that we are becoming perhaps way TOO picky these days, and that there IS a huge difference in the earlier generation of gamers compared to the two newer ones (X & Y gens) who do seem to want everything perfect and yesterday.
But I digress - what about the trees - the trees . . heheheh
Wow, everyone is flaming cos i said the graphics were terrible.
Actually that is not 100% true…
I only have accused the first 5 second sequence of not being up to scratch. And then I have PRAISED. The game of looking fantastic from then on out.
People need to read the whole article instead of reading one sentence before making accusations.
I think the game will be a brilliant one, the game of the year in 2009. But like I said, I thought that type of tree died out in the PS2 era. And I also said that scene doesn’t reflect on the quality of the game at all.
and clearly its going to be an amazing game.
Here’s my opinion: All you grown up men find something else to do than read these articles, bash the writer for his work and playing silly a$$ games and get jobs, help your wives, do some laundry, do your school work, play with your children, call your parents–read a book or something ADULT LIKE –something than pretend to be some super hero or killer! GEEZE! He had an opinion—and you tear him down—losers! I am willing to bet some (if no all) of you that took time to bash him are just taking out your sexual frustrations on him. Yeah-you sit on your butts playing silly games in your fantasy worlds instead of getting out there in the real world…instead of getting laid, dudes! some of you sound worse than women on f****ing PMS!
GET LIVES YOU LOSERS!
Now, im gonna go have dinner with real people and talk to real people.
Damn tree huggin hippie’s, crying about the trees.
@nonamepunkaboveme
Just because you love wood doesn’t give you a right to come bash the comments given by the few who actually gave the article a chance and in essence were mislead by the articles name to actually be about something seemingly shocking ooooo. Your friends don’t like you they just like using you so don’t take out your aggression on us COMMENT THE ARTICLE NOT THE COMMENTERS
ROFL @ y’all…
Sorry, next time we’ll get Ben to write an article praising the crap out of a game, just so we can move from personal attacks onto fanboy assaults.
If indeed they are placeholder graphics, then all the better that we’ve identified something that Capcom can improve on come final print. If not, then there’s really no excuse as to why they’d choose these types of trees.
Regardless, chillout all
Wow. He isn’t saying the game is sucky. He is saying something about an aspect of the game he is concerned about.
Okay how important are trees? Well I loved how in Bad Company you can blast them and they fall down…so trees were important to me there. I would never have thought so. The destructibility of the game didn’t make it perfect visually though…each house looked the same inside. Because I pointed that out doesn’t make the game crappy but does make the buildings boring.
Then there’s grass. I like foilage to move and seem alive in the wind. Brothers In Arms doesn’t do that as so many games do these days. But the game is still good.
Pointing out flaws may be nit-picking, but we all have our expectations and pet peeves. Some hated the long-winded cut-scenes of MGS4 that interrupted gameplay, but the game was still amazing. Does that mean you shouldn’t criticise where the game might have been improved in your opinon?
We are all subjective and keeping developers on notice for any lazy graphics work is legit (especially when trying to preview the game). As long as we don’t base our opinion of the game until we’ve played it, there isn’t a problem pointing potential issues out. Look at how RE5 is geting a new control scheme when people complained about how dated the RE4 one was now.
This post is really crazy - making rising shit out of nothing!
You took too much drugs. ALL of you.
Einfach phantastisch.
One thing that is amazing is, that how some take some things and comments way too ‘personally’ about some games.
Yes, the authour did rightfully point out flaws that perhaps should not have been there in a “major public showing” of their collective work on an upcoming game. Their quality control in that area was lacking, and that is the job of those in the game “industry” to notice these things and point them out.
If they didn’t, then developers could basically get away with whatever they liked to, knowing that no one would dare comment about them.
The trees, grass and scenery should represent what it is meant to, especially if your game is being touted as the best thing. What this shows is, thatsome gamers take offence at “their” games being questioned, and even the fact that their comments be questioned.
Might I point out something, now you know what it feels like to have your opinion questioned and ridiculed. I agree with the writer, these thing do need to be pointed out, otherwise I would nothave given permission for it to be published.
I might not ‘agree’ with some aspects of it, he does point out something that should never have gotten past the QC department of the Developers, and I ap[plaude him for having the gonnads to mention it, especially on a game that has so much riding on it.
Many of the comments perhaps come from the other platform supporters, that are still miffed that their once only developers have now seen the light, and decided to make their game multiplatfom due to pure economic reasons, not disloyalty to their fanbase.
I have read some rather scathing reports from many writers on many sites and mags on games. Some warranted, some not, but one thing remains true, is that they do have the right to their thoughts and opinions. Otherwise we would have a society of “yes men” all praising everything put out by developers and publishers.
Without someone pointing out obvious flaws, developers would end up presenting YOU with lower quality games, knowing that no one will challenge them when they do. It shows them a breakdown in their line of quality control, and allows them to fix that.
Ten points for the writer in having the gonnads to challenge those that think the game can do no wrong. And as he points out, he believes the game WILL be GOTY when it does front. He is not dissing the game per-se’, but challenging the quality control of those responsible for allowing the segment to come out. For some it maybe small, but for others, it does show a lack of something within the system.
sorry, i just don’t see it.
Who cares what capcom does? Even if it’s crap it will sell millions of copies.
What is this? A joke? I’m about fed up with all these wanna be game journalists and their overwhelming knowledge of game design and digital art experience.
Build processes……
Whoa! Stop the press! Seemingly bad article IS bad.
@ mastershrredder
Then I suppose the same can be said for those ‘jurono’s who give games that are good ridiculously low scores, or alternatively, scores that are way too high, simply based on their platform biases.
Not many will agree with many people that write something they don’t want to hear, be that a writer off IGN, GameSpot, Times or Mercury News. Many companies tout thattheir product is beyound reproach visually (RFM, Halo, HAZE etc) and then gamers and reviewers alike see the obvious flaws and belmishes even in final builds.
If a company is showing off it’s prized possession, you’d think that the QC would ensure there wasn’t a thing that anyone could pick when it fronted, “especially” in a Japanese market, in their own territory. Just read many of the well known Japanese sites and mags, and they pick many of the developers efforts to pieces, sparing no remorse or thought of the consequences The Japanese say it as they see it - period. You should try reading some of their previews some time. Far more glaring that what the writer is saying here.
So what makes a western writer different from that . . . none. He is in no way saying the game is bad or that it won’t BE great, he believes it will be GOTY without exception, but he does point out a valid fact, like it - or not.
What usually happens IF a developer has a legit reason for something printed and they believe they have been wronged in some way, we get a nice, “polite” email stating so, and we either retract or explain why we did what we dis/do. (media in general).
We’ve done that in the past and been happy with it. However, I don’t see Capcom emails flooding the site asking for the thing to be taken down, as even those that love the game can see that there is a mix of styles in what is supposed to be premium footage. I’ve seen 10 times worse about Alpha builds on games, and we all know what an Alpha build is, but this game is well into several years of work, not 1 year or even 2.
So you’d expect QC to be a little more tight than it was. Again, the game will be great, and I’m looking forward to to, but I know there will be issues with it graphically on any platform, simply because that how games are. There’s not one single game produced that does not have such issues, but they will get pulled up about it.
What the f**k? And this is one of the top news on n4g.com? Unbelievable.
I bet you’ll still buy it.
fable two review(s) plz!
@ xboxoz360
“journalists and their overwhelming knowledge of game design and digital art experience.” -That was sarcasm.
I don’t care about the trees and other tidbits that were highlighted. Graphics don’t make the game although sharp graphics are always welcome. This was just a video trailer of an unfinished game for crying out loud. The point is for those of us who work in digital art and development, it is often quite amazing to read what media outlets crap out. All they talk about is resolutions and hardware power and they still don’t get it. It seems like you read more negative news about games than positive these days and in most cases far before it comes out to retail. Folks are just looking for something wrong or something to complain about (and then make it into a news item). Let’s bitch about melted ice cream before we even go out to get it.
I appreciate the insight, but please don’t assume that I do not follow development processes or the politics that follow.
Look im being honest here… Im gonna have to agree. This article is stupid. I cant tell from the screenshot whats meant to be wrong with it?
OH NOES TEH TREES!!!
